Newman symposium
Bishop Emeritus John Cummins
attended the beatification of
Cardinal John Henry Newman
by Pope Benedict XVI at a huge open-air
Mass in Birmingham’s Cofton Park Sept. 19,
the last day of the pope’s four-day visit to
England and Scotland.
Bishop Cummins will speak about the 19th century theologian:
Oct. 30 from1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m at Stanford University
Oct. 31, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Dominican SistersMotherhouse in Fremont.
Other symposium speakers include
Jesuit Father Ted Ross on “JHN: A Saint Long Overdue” and
Jesuit Father Michael Barber on “Newman’s Lessons for the
Church of the Third Millennium.”
Cardinal Newman was an Anglican priest who became a
Catholic after first founding the Oxford Movement to try to return
the Church of England to its Catholic roots.
